The filtering ceiling of the Kampai restaurant in Cadaqués

Cadaqués is a jewel that is hard to reach and small in size. A concentrated beauty or, perhaps, the most poetic form of the Costa Brava. A refuge for artists and lovers of silence, this small Mediterranean enclave not only demands respect from those who inhabit it but also intelligence and subtlety from those who intervene in it.
Its restaurants —many with tiny kitchens and a very close relationship with the landscape— are proof that small does not mean unambitious. Quite the opposite: the more limited the space, the more precise each gesture must be. That was our understanding from the very beginning of the project at the Kampai restaurant, a proposal for contemporary Japanese cuisine, elegant and sensitive to the place.

A highly demanding technical challenge

Designing a technical solution for this kitchen required more than experience. It required full attention. The ventilation system had to be efficient, silent, safe and visually discreet, without interfering with the venue’s architecture or the diner’s experience. At the same time, it had to facilitate the kitchen team’s daily work, providing thermal comfort and easy cleaning in a space where everything happens in close quarters.
At Luis Capdevila, we proposed a fully tailor-made solution: a continuous technical ceiling, with distinct zones for air extraction and supply, integrated lighting, and a flat design with no added volumes. This solution frees up the work area, avoids visual obstructions, and improves hygiene and maintenance.

Concrete benefits of the intervention

Among the most significant improvements we achieved in this project are:

  • Space optimization: the flat ceiling system eliminates the need for hoods and hanging structures, creating a greater sense of openness and flow.
  • Aesthetic integration: the ceiling’s design adapts to the restaurant’s visual language, providing coherence and discretion.
  • Comfort and efficiency: the even air capture avoids recirculation and maintains a stable thermal environment, even during peak activity.
  • Operational silence: ideal for a restaurant like Kampai, where every gesture matters and the atmosphere must support, not interfere.
  • Easy cleaning: the continuous surface reduces grease build-up and simplifies daily maintenance.
